Just Because… is a print and illustration exhibition by 5 artists based in Sheffield.Legend has it these artists are incredibly talented; as well as maybe having superpowers. And some say they are impossible to look directly at, on account of their incredible beauty… so don’t forget your sunglasses!Their work is believed to sometimes jump off the walls to live a life of freedom in the wilderness, so catch your own while you can at the exhibition shop! And rumour has it they are holding a soon to be historical event, based at APG Gallery on the night of Wednesday 20th March from 6-8pm. So don’t miss out on and evening full of whimsy and wonder, not to mention free drinks…

MY biggest problem with Catwoman #1: the art.

Reading the comic while sitting at a restaurant today, I found myself trying to recreate her facial expression in the above panel. Needless to say, as I was alone in public, it did not go over well.

Guys, THIS IS NOT A NATURAL FACIAL EXPRESSION. Ok, I know I’m not as attractive as Selina Kyle. But her face isn’t showing surprise, or anger, or sadness, but rather some unnatural attempt at combining all three. For those who are interested, I have included some possible alternate expressions. All of which came much more easily to my face.

Unlike, yaknow: 8/ or o/O or maybe o~O or…?

hm.. not quite.

yes. YES! PERFECT!!!

Alternate Universe Poke-People.I actually like an awful lot of these more than the original…

Collage Art

So, thought I wasn’t one for collage art, but maybe I just wasn’t one for dada. Found some sweet artists recently.

Jean Lecointre > Clients > Presse > 1.

This began through stumbling upon Jesse Treece’s tumblr, who really is brilliant. S/he opened my eyes that collage art can be aesthetically pleasing to look at, which embarrassingly enough, yes, was news tome. I hadn’t really given it much thought as a medium after being so put-off by Hannah Höch. How unpleasant it is to look at really distracts from the essence - whatever that may be, after hours of trying to decode I find I’m still wondering if any of it was even intentional.

Aaaaanyway, moving on to some more neat art.

Jesse Treece, Untitled, 2010.
Simple, delivers the point, just overall nifty. It’s clear Treece thinks about theory before gluing anything down, it’s all well balanced. Kinda a graphic take on it, very composed.

John Stezaker, Marriage VIII, 2006

Very interesting.. this guy was a kid when these stars were big, and he makes these pieces in the 00s. Takes on a different meaning with that in mind. Again, very intentional use of collage, very direct.

Looking at collage art makes me think of the drawing mini task from the first few weeks on extended design (the post below!). It’s the same line of thinking when it comes to use of iconography, except, beginning with readymade images (clip art?) and backtracking it from there to mash together your idea.

Takes a lot more mental energy than sitting down, doodling, and seeing what comes out. Really got a new respect for this media!

Apparently into drawing Dusty Springfield recently (more to be added). Attempting the art of getting down a likeness of someone (from photo) without ending up with a kind of… grinning mask that always seems to come about. Especially difficult with Dusty’s heavy eyeliner, she ends up looking kind of Egyptian?
These are just doodles to be honest, not a great deal of thought went into them other than passing the time with some drawing practice. No tracing but, admittedly, Photoshop is still cheating!
Need to get back into drawing on paper regularly… I’m in between sketchbooks. (Hence the Photoshop.) Note to self: sort that out.
